It’s been awhile since we’ve done one of these not-so-daily photo features, but this gem from Page & Divis by the always delightful Tenderloin Geographic Society is too good to let slide. I’ve been so conditioned to look at half-assed street art that I almost didn’t notice the donut.

As we mentioned yesterday today is PARK(ing) Day, where a bunch of people around the city will be occupying parking spaces in the name of reclaiming public green space, etc, etc. We could sit around and declare this a Bike People vs. Car People thing or whatever, but at the end of the day, it was just nice to see neighbors out in the street being friendly to strangers and such. The slideshow below is the scene from earlier today, about 1:30 – 2:30pm when the misty wet thing was about at it’s worst. Even though the Fell Street location that Fix Fell and the Wigg Party set up won’t get the same midday traffic as a metered spot downtown, they’re expecting a nice turnout during the evening commute. Of course, we’ll update you if anything wacky goes down at the Arco this evening.

Dearest Divisadero

It’s so hot outside, no one even wants to sit out on the sidewalk seating along Divis, but judging from this recently scrawled note in the Bean Bag Cafe bathroom, some brave soul toughed out the heat for long enough to pen a heartfelt goodbye to our rehabbed thoroughfare:

“Dearest Divisadero,

Thank you for everything. You have enriched my life & I will never forget you, X”

We sure hope X has found a sufficiently gentrified avenue to fill the current void in their life. Godspeed and bike parking, X!

New Sidewalk Cafe at Fell & Divis

I’ve noticed this dirt-cheap hot dog offer in the past (which may or may not be related to the hot dog cart guy that hangs out in front of the Independent), but now they’ve got a table and chairs out in front of the convenience store at the 76 Station. Because if there’s one thing people in the neighborhood love, it’s eating crappy hot dogs mere feet away from where people are pumping their gas.

Also, they don’t even have a Beer & Wine license so I don’t see this one lasting too long.

Breaking News: Old Dude Has Knife; Single Handedly Threatening To Roll Back Gentrification.

This dude infront of the Bean Bag Cafe had a knife and threatened to kill a number of crust-punk kids sitting outside. I don’t know why. I don’t even care. I just think that the guy has seen ‘Death Wish’ one too many times because God knows we all have opinions about gentrification in San Francisco but THIS guy took it to the next level, by threatening to kill us all.

I suppose if you’re going to kill someone, it’s best to do it with your NAMETAG CLEARLY VISIBLE and WEARING BRIGHT RED. I mean, honestly. Is he trying to stab someone in 1996? Caps and starter jackets? Really?

Also visible is the delightful ketchup squeezy bottle I used to eat with my delicious burger. That shit was legit! Nummers!

Because we’d hate to see the whole internet become one big blog about tagging, here’s a guy hard at work removing some 19-year old’s scribblings from the window of Five Star Truffles on Divis.

Now, here would be a good place to go on a rant about how making a bunch of loopy, indecipherable letters on some small business owner’s storefront is about as artistic as the doodles on a 4th grade girl’s Trapper Keeper, but when you actually think about it the people behind RapidRenu window restoration have built their whole business on cleaning this stuff up. Just check out their website, they’ve only been at this since 2009, but I bet they’re basically printing money at this point.

Wait, what was my point? I don’t even know anymore. Keep your tagging limited to ugly SFWeekly boxes and the bathroom at Bean Bag. Or something.

Mike Giant posted some photos from his art opening/friend’s brithday party at Bender’s last week, which I know isn’t technically in the neighborhood, but Giant was our neighbor for the lognest time, so I’m contractually obligated to post photos from any of his events. It’s not so bad when they’re gems like the one of Jeanette Simmons up there. Oh, and I’d like to apologize to the Birthday Girl, Vitti for assuming she was a dude from the name on the flyer. Sorry Vitti!
