Dead Dog Afternoon
by Andrew Dalton on December 1, 2009
Earlier today, around 1pm I grabbed my camera to head to the Conservatory of Flowers and take some cheesy closeups of orchids because it’s Free Museum Tuesday. On my walk through the Panhandle, however, there were a couple squad cars and officers shaking down the usual dubiously homeless people by the basketball courts. Nothing too unusual, but worth documenting nonetheless. But when I reached for my camera, I realized I left the battery at home (idiot). So I snapped an iPhone photo and sent that off into the twittersphere. (Click through for larger, if you care.)
By the time I got back from retrieving the battery, 4 squad cars were in the panhandle, all with full backseats. I also noticed a large black dog that appeared to be dead and bleeding by the park benches. Not to get all pulitzer prize on you guys, but it honestly didn’t feel right to document so I moved along.
An hour later, the basketball courts were taped off and the forensics team was getting all Dexter on the crimescene. I asked one of the officers what had happened and he simply let me know that a couple dogs were “out of control and one of ‘em had to be shot.”
Anyhow, that’s your news of the day, presented largely without commentary. Now go ahead and get to commenting about how terrible the police are, or how terrible it is that homeless people have dogs, or how terrible I am at reporting the news.

Thank you for sharing- but yes probably a bad omen
Thanks for the info — we heard the shot, saw the ruckus, from 3rd floor window on Oak, and saw another dog being chased down by 3 cops. It was rolling in dirt, frantically after they nabbed it. I know no more.
[...] no vegansaurus over here, but I’m a dog person and I’d really rather avoid another incident in the panhandle. So that adorable guy up there goes by the name Billy and he belongs to a friend of a friend of the [...]
