New Girls video is firmly San Franciscan: includes ironic trip to Disneyland, toplessness, nature

by Andrew Dalton on October 23, 2009

If you’re at all interested in the local music scene (which you should be, because of how you live here) you’ve probably caught wind of our local Pitchfork-heroes Girls. And I hope you managed to catch them before they blew the fuck up and started touring the world. They’re probably off somewhere right now playing a bar in Barcelona no larger than Madrone crowded with Spanish bros eating tapas and swilling Estrella Damm. Sounds about right, actually.

Anyhow, this video for their third single off of their album Album (Yeah, I know.) extends their retro aesthetic with some fun Californian moments – like painting rainbows on homemade birdhouses, and a playful girl in a vintage topless swimsuit smiling and covering up while the undoubtedly frigid and shark-infested waters lap at her ankles. Their trip through the It’s a Small World ride at Disneyland (seriously, what’s that called?) only serves to remind us how our own little band that could is now the darling of all the big boy music blogs. I want to be Laura’s friend forever too.

[Note: Relatively Safe-For-Work - the only nipples in the video were attached to the boys in Girls, not the girls in the boys' video. Confused yet?]
